Synthesis of 2, 4 - Dihydroxybenzophenone (UV-214) with the Phase Transfer Method

Abstract


2, 4 - dihydroxybenzophenone (UV-214) is obtained by using resorcinol and benzotrichloride as feedstock in distillated water. The quality of 2, 4 - dihydroxybenzophenone is significantly improved by adding some water-soluble organic solvent into this reaction system. It is shown that acetic acid and dimethyleformamide get better results. The effects of various surfactants on the reaction are mainly discussed. The surfactants consist of octadecyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride, octadecyltrimethylammonium bromide, tetrabutylammonium bromide, 1-dodecane sulfonic acid sodium salt, sodium dodecyl sulfate, some industrial pure emulsifiers and polyethylene glycol (PEG). The experimental results indicate that the purity and yield of 2, 4 - dihydroxybenzophenone with adding 0.8g octadecyltrimethylammonium bromide into this reaction system reaches 99.7% and 95.7%, respectively. octadecyltrimethylammonium bromide is an ideal phase transfer catalyst.
